You will need to designate an agent if you are forming a limited liability company or corporation in California.

A registered agent is an individual or business entity who receives state legal documents and forwards them to you. Why is this necessary? Who should you designate to be your registered agent in California?

This guide will provide all you need to know about California registered agents.

What is a California Registered agent?

We get many questions from entrepreneurs in California about why a registered agent is necessary to form an LLC/corporation. Although it may seem like a redundant role for a registered agent, this is actually a crucial role.

If your company is sued, the registered agent will provide a reliable means for the state of California to reach you. A lawsuit could be filed against you without your knowledge if you don’t have a registered representative.

Although California doesn’t have a recommended list for registered agent services, we reviewed the best options and compiled a list.

Who can be a California registered agent?

California Secretary of State stipulates that to be an LLC or corporation’s registered agent, you must either be a resident of the state with a physical address (P.O. Boxes are not acceptable. California law prohibits you from being your own registered agent.

Apart from the legal requirements, it is important to discuss who should act as your registered agent. You can declare yourself to be your registered agent. This has pros and cons.

You can save money by not having to pay anyone to be your agent. However, your home address will likely become public record. This is not ideal. You will also need to be present during normal operating hours (9-5, M-F).

Entrepreneurs often want a friend or family member to act as their registered agent. However, if they don’t have any experience in this role, they may not be able to know what to expect. Although this option is possible, it can be costly.

We prefer to hire a registered agent service. This provides convenience, affordability, and peace of mind unmatched by any other options.

How to appoint a registered agent in California

This question will depend on the type of business that you are starting. However, if you form a corporation or LLC, you will need to name your registered agent.

Depending on whether your LLC is a corporation or an LLC, you will need to name your registered agent in either field #3 of the Articles of Incorporation or the Articles of Organization forms (used for corporations), respectively. The document must be completed in both cases by the registered agent.

How do you change a registered agent in California?

It is easy to modify your registered agent.

You can submit a Statement of Information to the California Secretary of state in order to change your California registered agent. The File Online page allows you to fill out and submit the form online. Select either the “LLC Statement of Information or the “Corporation Statement of Information tabs.

You can also submit your Statement of Information via mail. You can either complete the Statement for LLCs (form LQ-12), or the Statement for Corporations (form SI-551) depending upon the type of entity.

California’s fee to change your registered agents is $20.00 or $25.00 depending on whether the company is a corporation, LLC or a partnership. This makes it easy and affordable to change your registered agents.

What happens when a California registered agent decides to resign?

Sometimes, a registered agent might have to quit their position.

To proceed with resignation, the current registered agent of the corporation or LLC must complete the Resignation of Agent to Serve Process document (also known as form RA100). This document requires five pieces of information. They must include the entity’s name and filing number. The name of the resigning agency. A statement of resignation must be included. The form is free to complete.

Why should you hire a professional California registered agent service?

A professional registered agent can be a great option. They will act as both your agent and can also serve as an accountant or lawyer.

Privacy

We believe the greatest benefit is privacy protection, which allows you to keep your address private. A registered agent service is almost always cheaper than having an accountant or attorney serve as your agent.

Professional Service

We also like the fact that these companies are specialized in providing high-quality registered agent services. They are well-informed and know what to do.

All over the country

Another benefit to hiring a registered agent is that they operate in all 50 states. This means that you don’t have to hire another registered agent if your business expands into another state. The same registered agent can provide you with the coverage that you require in the new state while also providing the same service in California. A lawyer or accountant would not be able to help you expand in a new state unless they had another office there.

Keep Compliant

A majority of California’s professional registered agents offer a compliance calendar. This service is an added benefit that allows your registered agent to help you keep track of the due dates for ongoing LLC maintenance requirements such as annual reports.

Other attractive attributes of top registered agent service providers include access to their vast customer support networks. Many of them offer a year of registered agent services with every business formation package. This can save you a lot of money. A number of registered agent services offer volume discounts for customers who require service in multiple states or prepay for multiple years.

What is the penalty for not designating a registered agent in California?

To form a limited liability company in California, you must have a registered agent. However, if your registered agent service is lapsed, there could be serious consequences.

Failure to register a registered agent can result in your business losing its good standing before the state of California. The state has the right to dissolve your LLC at any time.

The difficulty of getting served when your business is sued would also be a problem. A court could decide to proceed with the lawsuit against you if it cannot reach your registered agent. This could happen if you fail or neglect to name a registered agent. It can also happen if your agent isn’t available during business hours to receive the document delivery.

Conclusion

You can see that designating a registered agent to represent your California company is not as simple as simply writing your name.

We believe there are some serious drawbacks to all options. However, we recommend that you hire a professional registered agent service as they have the least disadvantages. You don’t have to worry about losing good standing, having your LLC/corporation dissolved, or having a suit filed against you.

You can reach the California Secretary Of State if you have further questions.

California’s economy ranks among the strongest in the world, with small businesses accounting for 99.8% all California companies.

35% small businesses in the US are represented by LLCs. They offer many of the same benefits as corporations, such as protecting personal assets and avoiding all the paperwork.

With a little assistance, starting an LLC in California is easy and quick.

Top LLC Services for Starting an LLC in California

7 Steps to Start an LLC In California

You can make your LLC more profitable than you ever imagined. Just follow these steps.

Although it sounds complex, setting up an LLC is not difficult. It consists of filling out forms that contain basic information such as your business name, address and what your business does.

Because of their owner-friendly policies, such as pass-through taxation or liability protection, LLCs can be the fastest route to success for small businesses.

When you start your business, liability protection allows you to protect your personal assets such as your home and car. Pass-through taxation allows members of your LLC, instead of paying corporate income taxes, to avoid the burden of paying corporation taxes.

Although the articles of organization sound complicated and formal, they are quick and simple to fill out in California. It is easy to get an IRS EIN. It is easy to get one online.

California’s Requirements to Starting an LLC

You can quickly find out about the negative aspects of operating a California business. Even the worst news can be avoided by creating an LLC.

California’s requirements for naming an LLC can make it difficult. These rules are designed to protect your customers. These rules are useful for any state that licenses your LLC.

California does not allow certain types of LLCs, such as the series LLC. This is because you are a foreign entity. If you have a business plan that is clear, you can confirm that California LLC structures will allow you to implement it.

The annual franchise taxes that California LLCs pay are another downside. No matter how small your business is, they cost at least $800 annually.

Although the LLC operating agreement is not an easy task, it is common for all LLCs. This document can provide protection for your business and you in a state like California that is known for its lawsuits.

California’s state and local licenses can be more complicated than in other states. Keeping an LLC in Cali requires that you pay attention to changes in legislation. Highlighting changes in the last few years are California Revised Uniform Liability Act, and California Consumer Privacy Act.

Small business owners can find it difficult to comply with these regulations.

Northwest Registered Agent LLC services can help you create and maintain your LLC. This allows you to focus on your business and saves you time.

Step 1: Select a business name

Although choosing a name for your company sounds easy and fun, it is a crucial decision. California has strict naming guidelines, so this step can take a lot of time. Before you choose your business name, you will need to look for duplicates in several places.

Brainstorm ideas for name concepts

Write down a list of names that you like as you consider your ideal business name. You should not jump on the first name that you like. It may be already used by another company or website. Avoid the hassle of negotiating your chosen business name.

Add the LLC

If your business name doesn’t include one of these, add it to it.

  • Limited liability company
  • LLC
  • L.C.C.
  • Limited
  • LTD
  • Company
  • Co

It is possible to wonder what the business name will do to your brand when you create your LLC. You can file a DBA (doing business under) to create a business name for your LLC. Your DBA (or fictitious business name) must be submitted in the county you are operating your business.

Reduce confusion

California’s LLC names can’t contain words that could confuse customers with federal agencies or states. Avoid names such as The FBI: Fun Business Institute, or The San Diego Treasury.

You may need to prove that someone licensed in an industry, such as a bank, university, or attorney, is part of your team for certain terms.

Avoid words and phrases that suggest your business offers insurance, or terms that indicate you are an LLC.

These regulations ensure that businesses don’t mislead the public.

Ask your friends and coworkers to help you decide on a name for your business. This will help you to give people a clear idea of what your business does.

Look for state duplicates

After you have selected a few good business names, perform a search for California to find your favorites. Your LLC application may be rejected if the name you choose is too similar to an existing business.

You can search the internet

Hot commodities are web domains. Even if you aren’t planning to create a website immediately, check to see if the domain is available.

Changes and reservations of your name

You can reserve a name up to 60 days in advance if you are still trying to figure things out and want to keep it for future reference. You can simply file a reservation request.

You can also change the name of your business at a later date.

Step 2: Sign up for Northwest Registered Agent LLC Formation Services

California has more unique rules and regulations that other states than California. They also have more frequent changes than you might think. You must pay attention to deadlines for annual reporting, taxes, and fees when maintaining your LLC. When you start an LLC, it is important to adhere to their guidelines.

Northwest Registered Agent can help you with the complicated aspects of registering your LLC. They can help you keep your LLC status.

Agent of Service of Process

California law requires that businesses have an agent registered, known as an Agent of Service of Process.

The individual or company entity must be a California resident or corporation. They must be available to conduct company business during business hours on all days of the year. The agent of service receives tax forms and lawsuit notices.

A calendar is also kept by your agent to ensure compliance and that your California LLC receives all required reports. Your agent will also keep an archive of legal documents. This allows your company to be compliant with changing requirements.

ZenBusiness provides a free registered agent service for your first year of LLC. This service is essential for small businesses with limited staff and tight budgets.

They will handle LLC compliance so that you don’t need to worry about filing annual returns and other deadlines. You can also rely on their expert guidance to help you navigate any challenges your business may face.

Management: Make a decision

It is a crucial decision to decide whether your members or outside managers will manage your LLC. This guide can help you make an important decision about whether your members or outside managers will manage your LLC.

You will need to make this decision before you file your articles of organization. Choose between a member-managed and manager-managed LLC.

Step 3: Fill out your Articles of Organization

ZenBusiness will help you file your articles for organization.

Be sure to carefully proofread all forms before you submit them. Check that you and your partner are on the same page regarding the details.

It costs $70 to file your forms online, in person, and by mail. If you submit forms in person, there is an additional $15 drop-off fee.

The average processing time for the articles of the organization after they are submitted is five days. The state can also process your filing for an additional $750.

Each amendment to an organization’s original articles costs $30. You will need to fill out another form.

Step 4: Create your LLC Operating Agreement

The operating contract is a California LLC requirement. Operating agreements outline the expectations and rules that LLC members have agreed to follow. Although not all states require it, it is strongly recommended.

This document is legally binding, and it will protect your company from any internal disputes that may arise.

Although you don’t need to file an operating agreement in writing, it’s a good idea to keep any amendments or written agreements with your LLC business records.

Use an operating agreement template

An operating agreement template is included with your ZenBusiness plan. This template can simplify a complicated process.

It can be difficult to reach an agreement on decisions about the distribution of profit and loss, ownership division, and membership structure. This template can help you make logical decisions.

The operating agreement also includes voting rights, the addition or removal of LLC members, and even dissolution procedures.

We don’t like to think about the end of a project when it is just beginning. However, a plan to dissolve your LLC can help all members see the future options for your startup.

Operating agreements will help the courts keep your California LLC status. This agreement is necessary in the event that your team commits an act that could cause your California LLC to be dissolved.

Step 5: Submit the Initial Statement of Information

The initial statement of information must be filed within 90 days after forming your California LLC. You will need to pay an additional $20 non-refundable fee. This can be done online, in person, or by mail.

This statement must be filed every two years after the initial filing. The report will contain basic information about your company. This report includes updated contact information and addresses, as well as confirmation of the main activities.

ZenBusiness will scan and archive your legal mail if you keep following them. This ensures that all your critical communications are in one place. This makes it easy to locate your LLC records, making it easier to maintain your LLC status.

Step 6: Compliance with California Tax, Federal Tax, and Other Regulatory Requirements

You may need additional business licenses depending on the location and function of your California LLC.

If you are opening a clothing shop LLC in Berkeley, California you may also need:

  • The city issues a business tax certificate
  • Alameda County DBA Statement
  • CalGold certification to ensure safety and health standards

You may need a license if you are operating in more than one California municipality. You can start by visiting the CalGold webpage.

To ensure everything is covered, you may want to consider hiring legal services. Incfile offers the best online legal services for startups. They can assist your team with the legal requirements of your local California community.

California employee and sales taxes

California LLCs may also need registration with the California Tax Authority. California taxes are complex. California employer taxes alone include:

  • Employer withholding tax
  • Tax on training for employment
  • Unemployment insurance tax and Disability insurance

Franchise taxes in California

Paying your annual franchise tax is another thing to do on the California LLC tax checklist.

California’s fees are more expensive than those in other states. The annual fee is $800, regardless of how much your business earns. Additional fees will apply to LLCs with more than 250,000 members.

This franchise tax may not apply to some LLCs. To ensure compliance, it’s a good idea for your business to consult a tax professional.

Step 7: Get your EIN

An EIN is an employer identification code that the Internal Revenue Service assigns. This ID number is required to file your California state and federal taxes, manage them, and open a bank account for your LLC. The IRS has an easy online form to request your EIN.

If you intend to hire employees, an EIN is required. This ID is unique for your LLC. You will need to request a new EIN, even if you already have one for your company before you file for an LLC.

ZenBusiness’ Premium package ($299 + California state fee) includes even more add-on features:

  • Domain privacy, email address, and business domain name: Get your business online to increase credibility and reach more customers.

#4 Tailor Brands

Another favorite LLC service is Tailor Brands. This automated platform assists with LLC formation, branding, and building business websites. Its goal is to help entrepreneurs launch their businesses by offering a single-stop shop.

Tailor Brands’ premium Elite Plan ($199 + state fees), is what sets them apart. The Elite plan is a great choice for California businesses that want to establish an online presence. These include digital business cards, logo creation, and graphic design tools for social networks.

Tailor Brands Pros

#5 Harbor Compliance  – Best Compliance Software

Compliance is in its name and Harbor Compliance lives up to its mission to provide businesses with useful tools to manage their legal obligations.

Technically, Harbor Compliance can be described as an online tool that allows you to manage many of your compliance requirements. The software allows you to review, file, and renew documents. You can also receive communications from your registered agent.

Harbor Compliance specialists are available to help you review documents and alert you if something is amiss.

Harbor Compliance is a better choice if you are looking for a complete solution that includes additional services such as trademarking or business domain registration. This company is worth looking into if you are serious about compliance and have already filed your LLCs.

What makes Harbor Compliance great?

Harbor Compliance’s Entity Manager software tool is a standout offering. This tool and formation package includes registration agent services, compliance audits, and DBA renewals. It also has other essential features that ensure compliance year-round.

Harbor Compliance’s software allows business owners to search for state requirements using its license management tool. You can then track each license’s renewal status right from your dashboard.

The cost of forming an LLC is $99 plus the state filing fees. However, there are other options available for expedited filing. Depending on the state, registered agent services start at $89 per year.

14 Other LLC Services to Consider

  • Swyft Filings
  • MyCompanyWorks
  • Inc Authority
  • Incorporate Fast
  • Bizfilings
  • RocketLawyer
  • LegalZoom
  • Incorporate.com
  • CorpNet
  • MyCorporation
  • Direct Incorporation
  • InCorp
  • National Incorporators
  • Sundoc Filings

6. Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings provide a lot of value with their $49 Basic Package.

They will help you complete your Articles of Organization, file them for you, provide a 30-minute free tax consultation with one of the in-house accountants, allow you to track your filing progress online, and even register your business domain name.

They are not higher up on the list because unlike Northwest they do not offer a free year for their registered agent service.

The only problem with SwyftT Filings is if you require a full year’s registered agent service, you will need to pay $149. They are three times more costly than Northwest.

7. MyCompanyWorks

My Company Works looks a lot like Swyft Filings.

The Basic Package includes everything needed to create an LLC. However, they charge $79. You will need to pay more if you wish to add a registered agent service. MyCompanyWorks will charge you $279 to upgrade to their Premium Package.

8. Inc Authority

Inc Authority is probably the most deceptive pricing strategy on this list.

You are lured in by the promise of a free business set-up, but as you can see with Incfile, it is often more costly in the long term.

They will file your initial Certificate Of Formation for $0 plus a state fee. However, if you need anything more (like an Operating Agreement or EIN) their next cheapest package costs $399. You can also upgrade to the $799 premium package if you need a year of registered agent service.

IncFile is the best option if you only need your Certificate of Formation to be filed for free. Northwest will still be the best choice if you need anything beyond this.

9. Incorporate Fast

Incorporate Fast stands out from the rest by living up to its name. When you sign up for the $99 package (plus any state fees), they promise to file your paperwork within 24 hours. This promise is exclusive to them.

This is a solid service when you consider the fact that the Basic Package includes help with your Operating Agreement, some sample documents, and one year of their registered agent services.

They’re almost twice the price of Northwest, and they don’t offer free tax consultations or online document storage.

10. Bizfilings

BizFilings can file your formation documents and offer a year of free registered agent service. They do not offer online document storage, a business tax assessment, or an Operating Agreement template.

11. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer is an addition to the list. This is because LLC formation, which isn’t a service they offer, isn’t one of their main offerings. It’s actually a complement to the main service Rocket Lawyer provides–online legal services.

Rocket Lawyer can assist you with your initial filings and provide an online document storage platform. It costs $99 plus state fees. Rocket Lawyer’s business formation service is not the most affordable or the best supported.

Rocket Lawyer offers great online legal services. Their LLC service is not that great.

12. LegalZoom

Overpriced in my opinion. LegalZoom has a similarity to Rocket Lawyer. They are primarily an online legal services company, but also offers formation services. They will file your Articles of Organization and provide a bank resolution for $99, after which you are on your own. They do not provide any free registered agent services.

You might use them already for your online legal services so you could consider using them to create an LLC. When adding a registered agent $299, an LLC operating agreement template $159, and other features, the price can go way up.

You are paying a premium for the LegalZoom brand.

13. Incorporate.com

Incorporate.com offers limited LLC formation packages, just like Rocket Lawyer or LegalZoom. But it’s not a side service. This is their main role, and they do it as well as they can. It’s not that inspiring.

14. CorpNet

Corpnet charges $79 to provide business formation services. However, they only file your initial documents and provide compliance alerts regarding your annual reports and tax payments. However, they do not provide registered agent services for the first 60 days.

IncFile is a better option if you only need a small selection. Northwest offers more options.

15. MyCorporation

MyCorporation costs $133 plus state fees to prepare your Operating Agreement and to process your Articles of Organization. Additional costs will apply if you require more extensive features such as those offered by Northwest.

16. Direct Incorporation

Direct Incorporation continues the trend of charging too much for very little. They offer their California LLC service at $147 plus state fees. Although they do offer an EIN and a bank resolution, it is still not market leader.

17. InCorp

InCorp assists with the filing of your California LLC formation paperwork and also assists with your California LLC Operating Agreement. All for $117

18. National Incorporations

Nationwide Incorporations costs $200 for the same services that you can get from InCorp.

19. SunDoc Filings

SunDoc Filings will submit your formation paperwork at $79, and you can get a few extras if the $99 or $279 packages are purchased. No matter which option you choose, you still get far less value than Northwest.

If you run a corporation or LLC in California, you must choose a registered agent to receive state document deliveries. Regarding who should render this crucial service, you have a few possibilities, but we recommend using a registered agent service.

These are my top picks for the best California registered agent service

Northwest Registered Agent

Bizee

ZenBusiness

LegalZoom

For a yearly fee, these businesses will act as your California registered agent (also known as an “agent for service of process” in California), receiving documents such as service of process, and tax documents, reminding you to file your initial report and statements of information, and more to keep your company in compliance with state law.

I’ve researched and tested 11 California registered agent services and selected the top six services to feature and review.

This article will help you choose the right registered agent to represent your business. This article will explain the basics of registered agents and answer common questions regarding California registered agents.

If your LLC hasn’t yet been created, you can get one year free of charge registered agent services if your LLC was formed with Northwest Registered Agent (39 + state fees).

2. Incfile (Best Budget Registered Agent)

Price: $119

Incfile’s most famous claim to fame is its free business formation service. This includes one year of registered agent services. Incfile is just one of their services. Let’s take a look at what else they have to offer.

Visit Incfile

Incfile Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Register as an agent to receive a free business formation
  • Their prices are very reasonable and their 20-year experience is great.
  • Excellent customer feedback

Cons

  • They are well-known for upselling. This is a great way to make money, but it can quickly get expensive.

Incfile has more than 30,000 online reviews. They are a top choice in California for registered agent services. Incfile is the only company to receive this many reviews.

Incfile can seem a little pushy when it comes to upselling. Incfile has many add-on options that will remind you of this as you move through the order process.

Incfile is a company that has been around for nearly 20 years. They have helped to form over 500,000 businesses.

3. ZenBusiness (Best New Registered agent)

Price: $99

ZenBusiness is a great business. ZenBusiness has a great deal for those who are still not forming their California LLC/corporation. For $39, they will set up your business entity and offer a year of registered agent services. This is an incredible combination of features!

Visit ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness charges $99 per year for California registered agent services. Let’s take a look at ZenBusiness and discuss how it can affect your decision.

ZenBusiness Pros & Cons

Pros

  • I love the $99 price point
  • I love the “worry-free” guarantee compliance feature
  • Great customer feedback
  • Strong customer service

Cons

  • ZenBusiness may outsource registration agent services
  • Register agent service can be added to LLC formations for $99
  • Some competitors are more experienced than others.

California registered agent service costs $99, but it is very affordable. ZenBusiness offers a $149 package that includes an annual report. This is a fantastic deal.

ZenBusiness has over 6,200 reviews online. Nearly all of them were positive. They have one of the highest customer satisfaction scores in the industry. ZenBusiness has a helpful and knowledgeable customer service team that can help with any difficult questions.

ZenBusiness is a relatively new service. Their experience is less than that of many other competitors like LegalZoom or Northwest. ZenBusiness is California’s top registered agent service.

4. LegalZoom (Best Brand Name Registered Agent)

Price: $299

Rocket Lawyer has many similarities with LegalZoom. It is however a large company with millions of customers. California registered agent services are expensive. LegalZoom’s rates are almost double that of Rocket Lawyer, and three times those of ZenBusiness.

Visit LegalZoom

LegalZoom Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Millions of customers served
  • The industry’s longest-running support
  • 100% satisfaction guaranteed

Cons

  • Although customer reviews are sometimes negative, they do improve.
  • LegalZoom’s high prices are not something I like.

LegalZoom’s guarantee of 100% customer satisfaction was a great feature. It’s much stronger than other companies’ refund policies. They have the longest customer support hours in the industry with 9 hours available on weekends and 14 on weekdays.

LegalZoom’s high fees for registered agent services is a problem. LegalZoom does offer registered agent services but they do not offer them as part of their business formation packages. LegalZoom’s value propositions are not comparable to those of the other options in this guide.

5. Harbor Compliance

Price $99

Harbor Compliance is a premium service for business formations. This service is only available to large businesses.

They provide outstanding value for registered agent service and have one the lowest national prices that we’ve ever seen. Is it worth the effort?

Harbor Compliance charges $89 to $99 per year for registered agent services, depending on the state. This is an excellent price point. You can get volume discounts or prepay for multiple year’s service in multiple states.

Harbor Compliance was established in 2012 and is one the newest companies within this sector. Harbor Compliance, a brand new company, has been in existence since 2012. Harbor Compliance has served more than 10,000 clients and is a rising star within the industry.

There were only 100 reviews available online. They are high-quality reviews, but not as many.

6. InCorp

Price: $129

InCorp might be the best choice for you if your goal is to get the lowest price for nationwide registered agent services. Although the base rate is high, you can reduce your annual cost to $87 by using volume discounts.

InCorp will charge only $129.95 per year for registered agent services. If you’re willing to prepay for additional years of registered agent services, InCorp will offer deep discounts.

They are highly sought-after because they have a large client base.

Customers receive a compliance calendar as well as their EntityWatch program which monitors your business for signs of identity theft.

Cons

InCorp has only a few reviews online. Their average rating isn’t very high. Their LLC formation cost $99.

Additional registered agents

California has many registered agent services. These six services are the most sought-after. However, I would like to highlight some other services that are available in California.

7. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer offers a more affordable option than LegalZoom. Their product offering includes a limited number of registered agents. Online legal services are also offered, including talking with an attorney, document review, and ongoing legal services.

California offers $149 for a physical address. This will ensure that state mail forwarding is possible. Rocket Lawyer accepts service of process for your behalf but offers fewer services than Northwest Registered Agent.

8. SunDoc Filings

SunDoc Filings provides basic California registered agent services starting at $159. This includes service and forwarding of legal documents from the California Secretary of State.

Northwest Registered Agent does not offer a dedicated customer support system like the ‘Corporate guides’.

9. Swyft Filings

Swyft Files offers registered agent services to your California LLC/business for $149 It is not nearly as good as Northwest’s top-rated customer service.

10. CSC

CSC is a premium California registered agent service that costs $299 per annum. You must pay state fees to change your California registered agents. They do not have any premium features.

Switching to Northwest Register Agent could be an easy way to save money. CSC has a long and distinguished history. They are an option when searching for California registered agents.

11. Registered Agents Inc.

Registered Agents Inc. Costs $200 and includes the same features of Northwest Registered Agent at $125, including online account access and compliance alerts to keep you in good standing before the California Secretary-of-State.

What is a registered agent?

a California Registered Agent is an individual/business entity that has been designated by a California LLC/corporation in order to receive tax and legal documents such as service of process or compliance documents.

Although they can perform a number of tasks, registered agents have a larger role that is much more significant. They are the link between your business and the state where you do business.

Legal Matters

First, the registered agent must be named as the recipient of any California tax documents or legal documents.

To receive legal documents, the registered agent must be present.

The registered agent must report the delivery to your company and then forward the documents.

They should agree upon a set of processes for receiving and delivering the documents. They will decide whether the documents will be sent to the business by the registered agent via email, mail or fax.

California Business Compliance

A registered agent can help you ensure that your business meets all state-required continuing support filings.

Each state has its own rules regarding maintenance filings. These include annual reports and franchise tax payments.

These rules may change at any time, so your registered agent should keep current in order to maintain good standing with the state for your business and avoid dissolution or fines.

How to select a California registered agent

Two options exist for selecting a California Registered Agent. You have two options when it comes to choosing a California Registered Agent.

You could also become your own registered agent. This job is best done by a professional. It is not expensive and they will finish the job in a year.

Internal Registered Agent

Any member of the LLC can serve as the registered agent, which could include you or your employees. The Registered Agent will be your home or office address. Each LLC must provide its mailing address and principal office address to the state’s online public system.

It will be much easier to hire a registered agent because you can use their address as a post office address.

Registered Agent Services

For a reasonable price of $100-$299 per year, professional registered agent services can be arranged. This will ensure your business is represented by the best service provider.

We’ve compiled a list of the best registered agent services in California. They can handle the job for your benefit.

Choosing a California Registered Agent

These are some of the things you should keep in mind when choosing a registered agent.

  • Service Fee: Many states require that formal businesses register agents. It is therefore important to select the best-registered agent. An annual cost for a registered agent is $99-$300 It is a small price to pay considering the time savings.
  • Experience and tenure of a registered agent: Registered agents should have tested and established procedures for handling documents. Register agent services should have been in existence for some time. They are able to handle all your documentation.
  • State Jurisdiction Limit: It is better to have one registered agent for each state than it is to deal with multiple registered agents. This will reduce administrative burdens. Each state has one of our recommended registered agents.
  • Monitoring and Follow-up Services: To ensure you’re fully informed about all laws, rules and regulations that impact your company, it is important to quickly obtain the most current information from your registered agent.

How can I appoint a registered agent in California?

An LLC can appoint a registered agent to act as the California Certificate of Organization. It can be done online or by post. No cost is required to appoint a registered agent. Only the state filing fee needs to be paid.

My research to find the best California registered agent

Here’s how I found the top California registered agents to help you form an LLC.

I was able to compare the packages and research information about California registered agents. I was looking for the best service when I tried to find the right registered agent for my website.

To allow my website to receive mail or process service, I needed a street address that was open during business hours. To keep my businesses in good standing with the Secretary of State, I needed compliance alerts.

As I spoke with entrepreneurs, small business owners, and friends who have online businesses, it became clear that not everyone has time or patience to look from site to site to find the best California registered agent service provider.

My knowledge enabled me and my colleagues to make informed decisions about California registered agent services. My advice was trusted by many who have read my website, which surprised me.

How did I choose the best California registered agents?

I started with more than 10 service providers. After my screening, I narrowed the list down to 4. Based on my four main evaluation steps, I chose my top four services.

My First Step: Reviews

I started by reading reviews and collecting, the honest voices of thousands of people just like me. Trustpilot, Facebook, and Better Business Bureau reviews overwhelmed me. They allowed me to categorize them according to various criteria (ease of use, affordability, customer support, privacy protection, taxes, etc.).

I was able to identify obvious frauds as well as misleading offers.

Second Step: Website Analysis

After I had removed the illegitimate providers I began to look at the websites of the remaining corporations to get a better understanding of what they stand for and how authentic their advertising is.

I was especially interested in optimizing their products and services, customer support, and company experience, as well as any recognition they received.

Third Step: Speaking with real customers

Websites and sales representatives can tell you a lot about the company. But customers will tell them how they deliver it. Are they efficient? Are they efficient? Are they polite? Are they polite?

Although online reviews can fill in some of the gaps, most reviews are written by people who have had overwhelmingly positive experiences. This can cloud your view. You can get a better understanding of your customers by talking to them.

I reached out to people who I helped find a registered agent, and new visitors to my site looking for one. It was wonderful to hear their stories.

I was able to see the entire service from every angle.

My fourth step: Talking with the Marketing and Sales Teams

To complete my research, I spoke with the sales representatives of each company. After gathering all customer complaints, reviews, and files, I began to ask tough questions about the company’s failure to meet their expectations.

Negative reviews are often ignored by many companies. Others will tell you that they have taken feedback into consideration and have improved their operations.

This was the final step that separated the ordinary from the extraordinary.

My Rating Criteria

These are the four key factors that influenced my choice for the best registered agent to represent California LLC.

#1: I checked the services and features

First, I looked at the company’s services and features. Other factors such as ease of use and cost don’t really matter if the company doesn’t provide the services California registered agents require. I viewed the companies in the same way a consumer and shopper would.

I was able to identify my own requirements for finding a good registered agent. I was curious if this registered agent service would be a good fit for me. Are they able to provide the features I require for my business?

These are the things I thought of:

  • Do you have access to online documents through the registered agent? Or do they mail them directly to your California street address?
  • Are you able to get alerts from the registered agent about compliance deadlines and filing deadlines for annual reporting? Is the registered agent able to give you a calendar for your LLC/business?
  • Does the registered agent provide privacy guarantees?
  • Is it possible for the registered agent to offer affordable California LLC formation services?
  • Is the state fee filing and payment responsibility of the registration agent?
  • You can choose to file the change online or mail it in.
  • Is the agent available to accept the service of process?

The top-ranked registered agents in California were those offering the most services, while those who offered fewer options were at the bottom or middle.

#2: I checked the pricing

Although most people focus on the price, it is important that you consider the product’s worth. This can differ greatly from one California registered agent. A good registered agent will cost you between $125 and $299 annually. LegalZoom is a brand name that charges $299 per annum. However, most registered agents know that Northwest offers the best service and privacy at a reasonable $125 per.

#3: I checked the ease of use

When you set up a business or LLC in California, your time is valuable.

My next consideration was the ease of signing up. My top choice was the easiest, most efficient and least intrusive system. I would give one of my lowest ranks to a company if they asked me to move one document from another in a slow system.

#4: I checked their customer service and support

No matter how user-friendly, intuitive, or simple a system is, all customers need support. Although not all business owners can be tech-savvy, California businesses should have a registered agent they trust.

When choosing an agent to represent a company or LLC in California, I took customer service into consideration.

California registered agent services were evaluated based on their ability to efficiently and quickly solve customer problems using highly-trained, experienced agents. California registered agents do not need to be required for limited liability businesses and small businesses in California. They should be available to answer calls quickly and give generic answers.

Conclusion

California registered agents are crucial to your company’s legal compliance. These tasks may seem easy, but if they are not done correctly, they could lead to substantial fines or even the dissolution of your company.

While you can always replace your registered agents later, it’s important to choose the right agent for your company at the beginning. You should also keep an eye on your compliance status to ensure nothing goes wrong.
